NRG Floats Requiring Customers To Affirmatively Agree To Auto-Renewals At Enrollment Via Check Box
The following story is brought free of charge to readers by VertexOne, the exclusive EDI provider of EnergyChoiceMatters.com
In a powerpoint presentation posted in advance of an April 16 working group meeting in the Massachusetts DPU's retail energy review proceeding, NRG Energy has suggested for consideration, among other things, requiring that customers must affirmatively consent at the time of enrollment for auto-renewals to be used, via a checkbox selected by the customer
Among other things, Massachusetts DPU Staff have proposed to ban auto-renewals
See full details on all Staff proposals here
In the powerpoint, NRG states that auto-renewals are a convenience that consumers have
come to expect across all industries
NRG, as a "solution for consideration", suggests, as an alternative to an auto-renewal ban, to instead, "[g]ive the customer a CHOICE about auto-renewing (checkbox) at time of initial enrollment".
NRG also suggests for consideration a requirement for retail suppliers to provide notice for "all" price increases [emphasis by NRG].
As previously reported, DPU Staff propose to require that all retail energy sales must be accomplished through the state's Energy Switch MA website, with door to door and telesales banned
NRG suggests, as a "guardrail" for acquisition channels, an annual permit fee and higher security requirements for suppliers wishing to acquire customers through D2D & Telemarketing
NRG suggests restricting the ability to acquire customers via D2D & Telesales to only those retail suppliers meeting quality standards
In a "Food for Thought" section addressing "Supplier Requirements", NRG lists, "Advanced Tech", in addition to the aforementioned Increased Financial
Obligations and Quality Assurance
With regards to Energy Switch MA, NRG suggested that the site could add a function for customer enrollment validation, under which Energy Switch MA would, upon the input of customer data points for verification, generate a utility account number (or a different unique ID) to advance enrollments. As envisioned, the DPU would be provided with controls to monitor supplier access and attempts (fraud prevention)
