The following story is brought free of charge to readers by VertexOne, the exclusive EDI provider of EnergyChoiceMatters.com
In an application at FERC for approval of its acquisition of Calpine, Constellation proposed to divest all but one of Calpine’s combined cycle natural gas plants in eastern PJM, for a total divestiture of 3,546 MW (summer
capacity) of generation.
Calpine owns 5,341 MW of generation capacity in PJM.
Constellation owns 20,203 MW in PJM
The proposed Calpine plants to be divested are:
• Bethlehem Energy Center (all units, 1-8), a 1,134 MW natural gas combined cycle plant that
began commercial operation in 2003
• York Energy Center Unit 1, a 569 MW dual-fuel combined cycle natural gas
plant that began commercial operation in 2011
• Hay Road Energy Center, a 1,136 MW dual-fuel combined cycle natural gas
plant that began commercial operation in 1989
• Edge Moor Energy Center, a 707 MW simple cycle natural gas plant that began
commercial operation in 1965
The divestiture includes 2,782
MWs of summer capacity in the energy market in PJM East (Bethlehem Units 1-7, Hay Road, and
Edge Moor), and 764 MW outside of PJM East but in 5004/5005 (Bethlehem Unit 8 and York Energy Center 1)
In the RPM capacity market, the divestiture includes 2,404 MWs in EMAAC (Hay Road, Edge Moor, and
York Energy Center 1); and 1,134 MW in MAAC (Bethlehem).
Constellation and Calpine said, "Applicants expect a competitive bidding process
for the proposed divestitures with strong interest from counterparties interested in owning
and operating the divested resources in PJM."
The combined cycle Calpine plant in eastern PJM to be retained by Constellation would be York Unit 2 at the York Energy Center
