The following story is brought free of charge to readers by VertexOne, the exclusive EDI provider of EnergyChoiceMatters.com

National Grid customers in Massachusetts who remain on utility basic service for supply will see minimal relief in the forthcoming six-month default service pricing period, as National Grid's residential basic service electric rate will remain above 16¢ per kWh.

Specifically, for the period August 1, 2024 through January 31, 2025, National Grid's residential fixed basic service rate will be 16.055¢ per kWh, which is only about 12% lower than the current basic service rate of 18.213¢ per kWh

All basic service rates in this story include the new Basic Service Administrative Cost Adjustment Factors (BSACFs), which have been approved to take effect August 1, 2024, and the currently effective Smart Grid Customer Cost Adjustment Factors (SGCCAFs).

Per an exclusive review conducted by EnergyChoiceMatters.com on June 18 of competitive retail supplier offers on Energy Switch MA, 42 of the current 46 retail supplier offers are below National Grid's new basic service rate.

Six retail supplier fixed rates, from six unique retail suppliers, are under 13¢/kWh, providing savings of at least 19% versus the new National Grid residential basic service rate

One offer from a retail supplier is under 11¢/kWh, providing savings of over 30%

For commercial customers, National Grid's fixed basic service rate for the period August 1, 2024 through January 31, 2025 is 14.823¢ per kWh, which is about 14% lower than the current rate of 17.262¢ per kWh

National Grid's newly filed basic service rates remain subject to DPU approval

The continued elevated default service rate, with savings of 20-30% available in the retail choice market, come as Massachusetts lawmakers consider ending individual retail electric choice
