Gimmicky and confusing electricity plans are resulting in a large number of Texans, "getting screwed" and overpaying for "big-brand energy company plans," says a new campaign from an electricity shopping site

Compare Power has launched a brand refresh with a new logo, colors, and font, "that reflect our commitment to transparency and innovation."

As part of such refresh, Compare Power announced a, "movement to Unscrew Texas", and said that it is, "developing new features and tools to revolutionize how you choose and manage your electricity plan."

Gregory Companies LLC, for Compare Power, has filed to trademark the phrase "Unscrew Texas"

As part of the trademark application, Gregory Companies submitted a specimen webpage from the Compare Power site showing use of the trademark on the webpage, which, among other things, states, "What exactly do we mean by unscrewing Texas? Knowing what to expect, and not overpaying, is the essence of being 'unscrewed'."

"A huge number of Texans are getting screwed by their energy plan. We are overpaying for big-brand energy company plans, and we are constantly being bombarded with tactics that add to the confusion of choosing the best energy plan for our home. Tactics like free weekends, free nights, minimum usage fees, bill credits, gift cards, and more," the specimen webpage included in the trademark application states

The specimen webpage included in the trademark application includes a logo for Unscrew Texas that, in our estimation at least, appears to be the outline of a light bulb with the words "Unscrew Texas" serving as the base of the bulb, with the words stylized in such a manner so as to ostensibly mimic the threads of a bulb's base

Under the trademark application, Gregory Companies indicated that the "Unscrew Texas" trademark is for:

• "Comparison shopping services; On-line business directories featuring information and resources for consumers to compare energy, utility, telecommunications, insurance, and home and business service providers and provider pricing; On-line business directories featuring information and resources for consumers related to energy, utilities, telecommunications, insurance, and home and business services, and the usage thereof; Order fulfillment services; Price comparison services; Providing price comparison services in the field of energy, utilities, telecommunications, insurance, and home and business service providers via the Internet; Shopping facilitation services, namely, providing an online comparison-shopping search engine for obtaining purchasing information; Energy price comparison services; Promoting the goods and services of others by providing a website featuring consumer education information and price comparison services"

• "Brokerage in the field of energy, utilities, telecommunication, insurance, and home and business services; Energy brokerage services"

• "Education services, namely, providing an educational website and on-line information in the fields of energy, utility, telecommunications, insurance, and home and business service providers and provider pricing; Education services, namely, providing an educational website and on-line information in the fields of energy, utilities, telecommunications, insurance, and home and business services, and the usage thereof"

Gregory Companies also filed to trademark the phrase "Get Unscrewed".

Compare Power recently named Han Hwang as COO

Hwang spent nearly a decade at Red Ventures, the owner of a retail energy shopping site, in several roles including Vice President. Hwang also served as EVP, Partnerships at caring.com, a site which describes itself as an, "online destination for caregivers seeking information and support as they care for aging parents, spouses, and other loved ones."

Cameron Maloney also recently joined Compare Power and developed a partnership with Lemonade, a digital insurance platform, allowing Compare Power users to get insurance alongside their energy plan
