Hudson Energy officially began marketing in Canada under the Hudson brand on April 4 in Ontario. Direct Energy Acquires Additional Wildcat Hills Gas Assets Direct Energy has acquired natural gas assets located in the Wildcat Hills region of Alberta from Shell Canada Energy for $47 million (Canadian) in cash. The acquisition includes production of approximately 10 million cubic feet equivalent (mmcfe) per day (97 per cent natural gas), 45 billion cubic feet equivalent (bcfe) of proven and probable reserves (increasing Direct Energy's reserves by 8 per cent to 617 bcfe), and complements the company's investment in the area in the fall of 2010. The acquisition gives Direct 100 percent working interest in certain Wildcat Hills' assets and gas processing facilities, providing Direct Energy with the ability to optimize its investment and operations in the area. The acquisition brings Direct's total natural gas production to 172 mmcfe per day and enables the company to maintain its vertical integration of upstream asset coverage for downstream load needs within the 35-45% range identified in its North American growth strategy. Md. PSC Takes Viridian Complaint Under Advisement The Maryland PSC concluded its hearing Friday regarding a Staff complaint against Viridian Energy by taking the matter under advisement. The PSC heard testimony from both Staff and the company regarding a joint recommendation submitted by Staff and the company to resolve the complaint (see 3/30). Ohio School Associations Endorse FirstEnergy Solutions as Supplier The Ohio School Boards Association, Ohio Association of School Business Officials, Buckeye Association of School Administrators, and Ohio Schools Council have endorsed FirstEnergy Solutions' electric generation supply offer for school districts located in the Ohio Edison, Cleveland Electric Illuminating, Toledo Edison, and Duke Energy Ohio service areas. The four state educational associations established the "Power 4 Schools Electric Program" to endorse an electricity supplier, under which FirstEnergy Solutions will offer eligible member schools supply through 2019 in its affiliated service areas, and through 2014 at Duke Energy Ohio. The FirstEnergy Solutions offer in its Northern Ohio affiliated service areas for the next three years could save an average of about 16 percent off the generation portion of the schools' electric bills, the school associations said.
