N.J. BPU Eliminates Retail Margin, Expands Hourly Pricing

Email This Story
October 6, 2010

The New Jersey BPU eliminated the retail margin of 5 mills per kilowatt-hour added to all Basic Generation Service sales for customers at or above 750 kW, during its board meeting yesterday (Docket EO10050338).

The Board also lowered the Commercial Industrial Energy Price (CIEP) threshold, above which customers are subjected to hourly default service, to 750 kW from the current level of 1,000 kW.

A written order was not available.  Both changes are to take effect June 1, 2011.

The Board found that the retail market above 750 kW is "mature," and that the retail margin is thus no longer required.

Nearly 850 customers at or above 750 kW are currently on Basic Generation Service and are paying the retail margin.

The BPU said that migration to competitive suppliers among customers at or above 750 kW but below 1,000 kW is over 70%.
